Markit to Launch Web-based Environmental Platform, Markit Eco
New York, NY and London - Markit, a leading, global financial information services company, today announced the forthcoming launch of Markit Eco on May 27, 2010.  Markit Eco is a web-based platform offering guidance, tools and services to assist organizations in their carbon and environmental management programs, including greenhouse gas (“GHG”) disclosure and development of effective corporate sustainability and climate change strategies.

Markit Eco is designed to support the environmental asset and liability management needs of both public and private sector organizations.  Organizations that need to comply with emerging emissions legislation in markets around the world require a central hub to manage their emissions management strategy, and tools to help their organisation to successfully mitigate and/or offset their emissions, as well as disclose that status to regulators, investors, clients, employees and voluntary reporting bodies.

Niall Cameron, Executive Vice President at Markit, said:  “Companies have a critical need to understand and manage their carbon exposure.  Regulatory change and the expectation of greater investor disclosure has created the need for companies to develop carbon management strategies, aggregate their GHG inventory, and monitor, measure and report their emissions data.  Markit Eco is the ideal partner to help manage these environmental-related activities.”

Markit Eco integrates thought-leadership, applications and services to support the end-to-end workflow associated with environmental program management.

Markit has brought together a partner network to deliver an innovative solution that offers organizations a central hub to mitigate their emissions legislation risks, decrease the operational expense associated with executing emissions management programs and disclosing their emissions status to internal and external stakeholders.  Partners participating in the Markit Eco platform at launch include: IDEAcarbon, Misys, Baker & McKenzie, Markit Environmental Registry, Carbon Trade Exchange, and the Carbon Disclosure Project.

Ian Johnson, Chairman of IDEAcarbon, said:  “It is now very clear that companies increasingly view environmental risk as a business risk, while CSR responsibilities or regulatory compliance requirements are driving corporates to decide on the most effective way to deal with their carbon and environmental footprint.  Given these challenges I am confident that the Markit offering will provide comprehensive and cost effective help in dealing with these issues.”

At launch, Markit Eco will offer tools to capture data on both enterprise and supplier carbon emissions to calculate an organization’s carbon footprint, and to benchmark it against peers and industry standards.  The platform will also provide connectivity to spot trading platforms for carbon credit acquisition and to the Markit Environmental Registry for listing, transfer and retirement of credits.  Markit Eco will also host a number of educational and project research tools, a policy knowledgebase and environmental-related news.
